What is Open PnP?
OpenPnP is a project to create the plans, prototype and software for a completely Open Source SMT pick and place machine that anyone can afford.
What is a PnP feeder?
This is a semi-automatic printable SMD feeder for both manual and automatic pick-and-place (PnP) machines. It uses the mechanical energy from a lever depressed by the user or picking head to both advance the carrier tape, and to peel off and take-up the cover tape.
How does a pick and place machine work?
The pick and place machine has a head on an arm which can reach all the reels, tubes, etc and it picks them up and then places them onto the board. Typically the head uses a small vacuum to pick the components up and then release them onto the board.

How SMD components are made?
SMD resistor construction The resistor is made by taking an alumina or ceramic substrate. Then a thin film of resistive material is deposited – this is typically metal oxide or a metal film – again the resistor is fired. The length, thickness and material used all determine the resistance of the component.

Why do I need pick and place software?
This is a great thing: being able to open the PCB files, output a work file, and immediately start clicking in the Pick and Place software makes setting up a new build very fast and efficient. If you are only building one or two designs then consider one of the machines with the built in computer.
