Tullibardine is Gaelic for “lookout hill” and refers to a 15th century small medieval chapel located near the distillery. The 225 in the name of this Highland single malt comes from the fact that it was aged for around 12 months in 225-liter casks that previously held Sauternes dessert wine from Chateau Suduiraut.
Is tullibardine a peaty?
Much like Tomintoul, Tullibardine is a modern distillery in Scottish terms having been founded in 1949. Tullibardine has to this point focused on traditional Highland whisky that is non-peated and has those hallmark honey and heather notes.

Where does Tullibardine 225 Sauternes finish come from?
This release is the 225 Sauternes finish and the bottle was kindly given to me by Michael at the Carnegie Whisky Cellars in Dornoch; a fine shop if you’re in the neighbourhood. The 225 comes from the size of the casks used to finish this whisky which holds unsurprisingly 225 litres.
When was the first Tullibardine malt whisky made?
The most memorable Tullibardines I can recall were frankly for the wrong reasons. Still, this all seems a footnote now as under new ownership and considerable investment, this distillery that was established in 1949 – ignore the 1488 used by marketing – has a renewed vigour and enthusiasm.
