Starrk was defeated by a captain using only shikai abilities. Ukitake forbid Kyoraku from going bankai, even when Kyoraku was only thinking of going bankai when things go hard. They both know the danger of Katen Kyoukotsu’s bankai, so Kyoraku ended up trying to defeat the Espada #1 just in shikai mode.
Why did Coyote Stark lose the battle with Shunsui?
Throughout the entire fight Stark was easily beating Shunsui and even continued to due so after 2 vizards/captain assisted him,the only reason he lost is becasue Shunsui had some ultimate ability that came completely out of nowhere. This is a really difficult battle to actually formulate for a multitude of reasons.

Starrk is a lazy and unenthusiastic man who spends much of his time asleep, and no one, except Lilynette Gingerbuck, his other half, appears to try and stop him from doing so. I have yet to see anything that would say so. Ulquiorra takes this he’s the only espada with a second form and as awesome as Starrk is he got owned by Shunsui in Shikai while Ulquiorra got owned by Hollow Ichigo. Stark wasn’t owned by Shunsui he was killed because of some stupid ability that forced Starrk to abide by it’s rules
