What is the connection between cenotes and the Chicxulub crater?
Any direct relation that exists between the Ring of Cenotes and the Chicxulub structure bears on regional hydrogeology. If the layer or zone responsible for the ring is deeply buried, it may act as a barrier to the movement of ground water across the main flow direction.
What caused the cenotes?
Rain water absorbs a gas (carbon dioxide) from the air and forms a weak acid. As this trickles down through tiny cracks in the limestone, the weak acid dissolves a mineral in the limestone called calcite. Over time the limestone is dissolved and a cenote is formed.
Can you visit the Yucatan crater?
Since 2018, the Science Museum of the Chicxulub Crater is open for travelers and enthusiasts who wish to find out more about the catastrophe that ended the Mesozoic era and some of the other effects that the asteroid impact had.
Where did the meteor hit that took out the dinosaurs?
It was formed when a large asteroid, about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) in diameter, struck the Earth….Chicxulub crater.

Can you still see the Chicxulub crater?
The Chicxulub crater is not visible at the Earth’s surface like the famous Meteor Crater of Arizona. There are, however, two surface expressions of the crater. The subsurface structure of the Chicxulub crater can be seen in a gravity map of the northwestern margin of the Yucatán Peninsula.
How did the asteroid impact on Earth create cenotes?
Acidic groundwater flowing seaward encountered the buried, mangled, compressed rim of the crater, which both concentrated and deflected the fluid flow. This ultimately created a cornucopia of holes around the crater’s circumference – at least, the part still on land – which a rising sea level eventually filled in to form cenotes.
Where do the cenotes in Cancun come from?
WHAT IS A CENOTE? They are sinkholes or natural pools of fresh water that come from the longest underground river system in the world. You can enjoy the four types of cenotes that exist with the Xenotes Tour that takes you to the best cenotes in Cancun.
What was the result of the ring of cenotes?
As a result of the impáct, the Ring of Cenotes, took shape, making together with the results in the geomorphology of the north of Yucatan, from the impact crater, the foundation for the functioning of the geohydrologic features of the peninsula of Yucatán.
Are there any open cenotes on the Xenotes tour?
With the Xenotes Tour you fly on a zip-line until you reach the waters of Ii’K, our open cenote. Also due to many millions of years of existence, the roof that covered this type of cenote yields, and leaves the area completely exposed. They are similar to a lagoon, having no rock formations in the upper part.
